Potter technique: Building-up / Modelling
For thousands of years humans have shaped clay with their hands to form figures, bowls, artistic objects and tableware.
Depending on the size and the thickness of the ceramics to be formed, bodies with different sizes of chamotte are used. As a very general rule of thumb: The larger and thicker the walls of the pieces, the coarser and stronger should be the chamotte used in the body.
From the fine porcelain body for pieces of jewellery up to life-sized sculptures made of clay with coarse chamotte or for “building site art projects” – it all depends on the right choice!
