Interview with Sascha Hoffmann

Sascha Hoffmann is a professional cook and designs plates to match his dishes. Harmony in the end product and quality and stability of the bodies play an important role for Sascha. Sascha mainly uses ceramic bodies from Goerg & Schneider.

With Sascha Hoffmann,

Please briefly describe your career and how you came to pottery?

I've only been pottering since 2018 and do the whole thing as a hobby, although I'd like to do full-time in the coming years. I came to pottery by chance. At that time I was invited to some friends’place and worked there for the first time on the potter's wheel. Ever since that time  I have loved throwing on the wheel. I'm a professional cook and it's a good thing to design the plate. Often a dish comes to mind and inspires me to design a plate to match. With vases, I never know exactly what I want to do beforehand, which is what happens when I throw them.

Which ceramics do you produce in your workshop?

Mainly basic commodities, such as vases, bowls, plates, cups. But I have also tried washbasins.

For me, everything has to harmonize as a whole during production, there should be nothing which could be seen as disturbing on any piece. However, I like to have a clay containing a little coarser chamotte, which remains visible in the ready- fired condition. Personally I find uneven curves disturbing. But fortunately, tastes are different. So, you can't really do anything wrong or right as far as design goes. Everything has its own character.

What bodies do you work with and why?

Right from the beginning I have worked only with stoneware and nothing else because I also produce plates for the gastronomy and they are cleaned daily in the dishwasher.
That's why I attach great importance to quality and stability. The majority of bodies I use are  from Goerg & Schneider because these bodies are really reliable with regard to stability when throwing or firing. Even in a leather-hard condition, the bodies are very easy to process compared to other bodies. I fire at 1200-1280 degrees, at these temperatures the bodies reach the desired condition.
