Interview with Frank Jung - Töpferei auf der Heide

Mr. Jung, together with your wife you have the pottery the “Töpferei auf der Heide”, Soonwaldstrasse 19 in 55595 Münchwald, in the Hunsrück area and you make beautiful, useful ceramics.

  • Please give a brief description of your professional career, - how did you get into this profession? In 1982 I started my apprenticeship as ceramicist,(wheel potter). After that I worked in different potters’ workshops. In 1984 I finished my training with a master craftsman’s certificate and established my own pottery workshop together with my wife in Münchwald.
  • What do you produce in your workshop? We produce stoneware tableware, plant pots, garden- and home decors.
  • How do you share the work? My wife makes only certain products and other products are made only by me. However we are both involved on most of the articles.
  • On which pottery market do you sell your products? We offer our goods on the ceramic market in Höhr-Grenzhausen, Darmsheim and Alzey.
  • When does your beautiful home exhibition takes place? Our home exhibitions take place annually, at the beginning of May under the name “Topf & Planzzeit” together with a gardener and the other one is at the beginning of October together with artisans and is called “Hofmarkt”
  • Why do you buy body from Goerg & Schneider ? The bodies from Goerg & Schneider have a constant quality. WE use two types of body: one for tableware (body 254) and a coarser one for plant pots (body 592).
  • At what temperature do you fire the pieces? We fire stoneware in a gas kiln at reduced atmosphere at 1260 °C.
  • What are the most important characteristics which make, apart from the appealing decor, your  ceramics so popular? Where can one use the ceramics?  Our tableware is suitable for everyday use and is dishwater proof. The garden -and plant ceramic is permanently frost resistant.
  • Where do you get your ideas from? How is a new design created? Many ideas develop through a general interest in art and handicraft. I also get suggestions from customers. These ideas only become a product if they can be implemented in a good, functional and fancy way.

Many thanks for this brief interview Mr. Jung.
